For many nature enthusiasts, Lake Kerkini is well-known, primarily due to the vast breeding colonies of the iconic Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus). During our tour, alongside observing this emblematic species, we explore the lake’s other natural treasures by hiking through adjacent meadows, shrublands, and thickets.
Lake Kerkini was artificially created in 1932 by damming the Strymon River and subsequently transformed in 1980 on what was once an extensive marshland. Today, it stands as one of Greece’s most important avian habitats and a crucial stopover site for migratory birds in the Central-Eastern European flyway. The area is designated under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance.
Currently, around 227 bird species have been recorded in the lake’s environs, making it a true birdwatcher’s paradise and a hotspot for biodiversity conservation.
