Guided private tours in the enchanting Greek habitats

Awakening Northern Greece – Early Spring 4-Day Ecotour

200 000 Ft

Spring – the season of nature’s rebirth – is as marvellous in Greece as it is across the rest of Europe. At this time of year, with no tourist crowds, both land and sea are wonderfully peaceful and serene, yet the number of sunny days is high and daytime temperatures often reach 20 °C. Many plant species, such as Crocus flavus, Romulea linaresii, R. bulbocodium, Galanthus elwesii, Asphodelus ramosus, Asphodeline lutea, Iris reichenbachii, Anemone coronaria, certain Ophrys orchids, and one of the smallest ferns, Ophioglossum lusitanicum, can only be admired at this time of year.
Due to the low sea temperature, almost every day offers the chance to observe marine mammals (common and bottlenose dolphins, and, with luck, the endangered Mediterranean monk seal), large schools of tuna, Mediterranean and Yelkouan shearwaters, and sandwich terns close to shore. On some days, the region’s iconic reptiles – Hermann’s and Greek tortoises – can already be seen basking. This is also a peak period for migratory bird species, with flocks of pelicans and flamingos resting in the lagoons.
During this season, there is also the possibility to fish for the common squid (Loligo vulgaris). For those interested, we offer an optional squid fishing experience for an additional fee of HUF 30,000, allowing for close-up encounters with and the capture of this fascinating species.

  1. day: Arrival at Thessaloniki Airport, transfer to accommodation. En route, we will visit the geological site of Nyphopetres and observe Dalmatian pelicans and other waterbirds at Lake Volvi.
  2. day: Hike in the Nestos Gorge and Delta. This tour provides insight into the delta ecosystem created by the Rhodope Mountains and the Nestos River that cuts through them.
  3. day: Excursion to Mount Pangaion (1,956 m), the southernmost peak of the Rhodope range, renowned for its remarkable biodiversity. In the late afternoon, dolphin watching in nearby bays; optional squid fishing until late at night.
  4. day: Sunrise observation and search for marine mammals and tuna schools, exploration of coastal shrub habitats (phrygana), and – optionally – participating in a coastal clean-up to help protect the species and habitats we have discovered. Return transfer to Thessaloniki Airport.
